Auburn AL, April 2, 2022 – Your Memphis Tigers ventured to the University of Auburn Tiger den to test themselves against several of our fellow SCRC conference members. It was a beautiful day for players and fans alike. Slightly cool and partly cloudy. Great day for rugby.
Memphis took on the home team right off the bat and fell to Auburn 24-0. We had beaten Auburn a month earlier at UAB, and the lads were very disappointed with the loss. Auburn had improved since our last test with them. Biggest loss of the day was losing our captain, Josh Scott, to an ankle injury early in the match.
We took on Alabama in the next matchup. Determined to make a good showing, the Tigers took it to Alabama besting them 33-0.
For the final match of the day, the Tigers fell to a prepared side. Georgia squeaked by the Tigers, 17-10 in a game that could have gone either way. With two losses on the day, the tigers were finished and the lads were not happy with the result.
“We learned a lot,” said Coach Beck. “Our fitness is pretty good but we need to work on taking advantage of opportunities when they present, and we certainly must do a better job on defense. On a good day, we can hold our own against D1aa teams.”
The Tigers next host an 8-team tournament at home on April 16. The tournament will be at Memorial and will be a lot of fun.
