Tigers Achieve Academic Honor Roll

It is with great pleasure that I announce that three Tigers have achieved a cumulative GPA above 3.5. These players will be recognized at the Virtual Tiger Awards Banquet, by USA Rugby and by the Southeastern Collegiate Rugby Conference for their achievements.

The Tiger Honor Roll includes

  • Alec Sisco – 2020 graduate and double major in psychology and Criminal Justice, Alec was a key leader on an off the field. While thrilled with his successes, we will sorely miss his intellect and leadership.

  • Ethan Scott –  Current club secretary and double major in English and Philosophy, Ethan has excelled on and off the pitch.  He is tough at scrum half and plays  30 pounds over his weight. He is a rising senior, so we are looking good next year.

  • William (Liam) Scott – Junior majoring in Computer Science with a minor in Criminal Justice. He was a steady performer at flanker and we are glad we still have him with us.

Well done gentlemen!

Tigers Earn Badge Awards

Several Memphis Tigers earned Tiger Badge Awards this year. The Badge is given to players who have completed a full year of play with the Tigers. Though the 2020 spring season was cut short, the leadership of the Tigers decided to award the Badge to those who started the spring and who were faithful until the season was stopped by the University of Memphis and USA Rugby.

These Tigers will be provided a club badge (patch) to sew on their practice jersey or warm-ups. No player is allowed to have the Badge until completing a full year of play with the Tigers.

It is an honor to recognize the following players for their committment to rugby at the University of Memphis.

Tiger Rugby Badge Earners 2019-2020

These players are mainly in their freshmen or sophomore year which looks great for the Tigers going forward into the 2020-2021 season. We are all very excited about the future.

Congratulations to the Badge earners for this academic year.

Tiger Spring Season Comes to a Halt

As ruggers everywhere know, the spring season of rugby was halted by Covid-19. The Tigers were on a roll when their spring season was halted by USA Rugby and the University of Memphis officials.

The players are busy staying in shape best they can. We are looking forward to a fun 7s summer and a return to excellent play in the fall.

The leadership of Memphis is working on its transition and we still hold hopes for a senior recognition social, depending on guidance from the city.

Keep an eye on this site to know what is going on. Hope to see you soon.

Tigers vs Miners -2/29/2020

The Memphis Tigers take on the Missouri S&T Miners on Saturday, February 29 at 1:00 at Memorial Field on the campus of the University of Memphis.

This will be a developmental match for both teams and will allow the fans and coaches to get a good look at the future of our program. We will be playing mainly the second team since the first 15 are focusing on 7s rugby this spring.

Missouri S&T came in 5th place last year in D2 play behind the Tigers who ranked 4th in the nation. “We did now know about the Missouri S&T program until this years playoff finals,” stated Coach Dave Hill. “When I saw that they were only 5 hours away (in Rolla MO), I figured we just had to get a match. ”

Our spring schedule is here for those who wish to follow the Tigers.

Rugby fans are invited to come watch the fun. You can visit with your team at Newby’s after the match.

Roedel and Gentry Top Backs in USA!

The Goff Report has continued to assess the play of ruggers in the USA and have named two more Tigers as top players in the USA.

Brittin Roedel is named one of the top 16 halfbacks in the USA and Calvin Gentry was named one of the top 24 Centers in the USA.

Brittin and Calvin engineered the winning season that the Tigers experienced in the fall of 2019. Their exciting play was a pleasure to watch. They were both tough on defense as well, with Brittin dropping folks twice his weight and with Calvin poaching multiple balls each match.

Congratulations to Brittin and Calvin on being named Top players in the USA!

Fall Tiger Awards Announced!

Calvin Gentry was recognized as the MVP of the club for the tough running that he added to the Tiger offense. He also helped other players improve their play as he would set them up for scores. He scored critical tries that kept the Tigers undefeated through conference play and he teamed up with Brittin Roedel to score critical tries in the Sweet 16 match in Greenville, South Carolina to send the Tigers to the Elite 8. Defensively, he kept the players properly aligned and was ever a poach threat, stealing ball on a regular basis.

Ethan Scott, Leroy Taylor, Calvin Gentry, Musa Banat and Brittin Roedel

Brittin Roedel was awarded the Best Back for his contribution at 10, slicing runs, and points from the foot. He clearly opened up the offense by being unpredictable. Defenses had a difficult time managing his sharp foot which kept them on their back foot. He drew a lot of attention which provided Calvin space to exploit. Brittin also tackles 50 pounds above his weight, and was eager to aggressively drop men twice his size.

Captain Musa Banat was elected Best Forward. His leadership of the team this season was a key to he team’s success. He was truly in command of his troupes, giving them heart, instruction and sometimes a kick in the tail when needed. He was a leader not a driver and was the first to pick up his game when needed. He also played above his size and weight as many great hookers do. He was strong in the scrums and lineouts, taking all of his ball, even getting some of theirs.

Tiger Scratch is an award provided to a player who plays through adversity, being scratched as a Tiger. Also, it is awarded to players who play with abandon, leaving a Tiger Scratch on the opponent players. The definition is interpreted differently over the years but the right person is always chosen. This year we had a tie at Tiger Scratch. Ethan Scott and Leroy Taylor were both awarded the Tiger scratch award for playing top level rugby giving and taking in true Tiger Scratch form. They played each match giving it their all and making their mark.

Congratulations to the Top Tigers of fall 2019.

Tigers Make Top 150 in USA

Tiger hooker and team captain, Musa Banat, and Tiger prop and club treasurer, Austin Kelley, make the top 150 tight five players in the USA in the Goff Report. Goff ranked Austin as one of the top 17 props and Musa was found to be one of the top 7 hookers in D2. You can see the report here.

“The Tigers team success has made this happen”, said Musa. “We are a team and I share this recognition with my fellow teammates. If we had not done so well as a team, this recognition would not have happened.”

Austin concurred and added, “Coach Tony Brooks taught me how to prop and made our front row the tops in our conference. We share this recognition with him and the other coaches.”

This is the first time in club history that Tigers have been nationally named as the top in their field of expertise. Congratulations to Musa and Austin.
