April 24, 2022, Murfreesboro, TN – Your Memphis Tigers are conference D2 Champions following the Southeastern Collegiate Rugby Conference (SCRC) 7s tournament this weekend at Middle Tennessee State University.
In an interesting tournament format, D2 and D1 teams played in pool play. The Tigers were beaten by D1 Kentucky, won the forfeit from D1 Kennesaw State and then lost to D1 Clemson. They then played nemesis Auburn for the D2 Championship, winning 17-5. With enough points to win the D2 title the Tigers gave Alabama a great contest with the
The win vindicated the Tiger leadership’s decision to have the Bluff City 7s home tournament on Easter weekend, the weekend prior to the SCRC Championships. Though the weekend schedule collapsed from teams pulling out, Sam Houston came to the rescue and gave the Tigers the test that they needed to marshal a win at SCRC. “We really thought having a tune up weekend at home before the tournament would position our players in the best position to win the SCRC,” said Rick Cole, Tiger Director of Rugby. “I’m really glad it worked out for the lads.”
“The boys showed amazing skill, playing hard against D1 opponents,” said Coach Phil. “They kept their chins up, fought to stay on the front foot and made us all proud.”
7s SCRC Champions 2022
With the conference win the Tigers are invited to attend the USA Rugby National Collegiate Championship, May 14-15 in Kennesaw, Georgia and the NCR Collegiate Rugby Championship, May 28-30 in New Orleans, LA.
Post season play is going to be expensive. We need Tiger Rugby Nation to help get the Tigers to these playoff opportunities. Please make a donation today at this link. Thanks for your support of the Tigers.
April 16, 2022Memphis TN– Sam Houston State University traveled to Memphis to participate in the Bluff City 7s collegiate tournament hosted by the University of Memphis Alumni. The trip was worth their effort as they took top honors on the day.
Four teams worked in a round robin format. Memphis A&B, Christian Brothers University and Sam Houston. The day was perfect for rugby with the weather around 65 degrees, overcast with intermittent slight sprinkles to cool the players.
A fairly good crowd was on hand despite the threat of rain and everyone seemed to have a lot of fun. There was a festive feel in the air.
Memphis A beat Sam Houston in the first match of the day. Then CBU won over Memphis B. Sam Houston won over CBU and Memphis A beat Memphis B. Memphis A won over CBU, and Sam Houston took Memphis B. The teams were re-seeded and a playoff was set. The last 2 matches of the day pitted Memphis A against Sam Houston and CBU against Memphis B.
Sam Houston had more firepower in the last match. Memphis A fought very hard with several amazing goal line stands, but they fell short on tries and took second place in the tournament.
CBU played very well on the weekend, showing the progress of their players in strength, fitness and rugby knowledge. “I was very impressed with the lads today”, said coach Brian Colbridge. “They outdid themselves.”

A surprise on the day was a the strength of Memphis B. Mostly pack players, they were dominant at moments of their matches due to the ability to control the ball while power running over opponents. “I loved seeing those props manage those quick offloads,” said Tiger Coach Dave Hill. “Gonna be great for our 15s in the fall.”
Memphis A was disappointed with their second place finish. However, as a tune up match for next weekend’s Southeastern Collegiate Rugby Conference (SCRC) 7s tournament, it worked out quite well. “For the most part, we came out of the weekend with a good run and the players healthy,” said Coach Phil Beck. “That was my main goal.”
Bling was passed out by tournament coordinator Steve Williams along with Rick Cole, Director of Rugby at Memphis. Many thanks to all who helped put on the tournament, including Marc Holley in the T-shirt booth, Referees Mariah Kaliapu, Rob Reetz and Troy McCall, and Jennifer Bone the trainer. Great thanks to Steve Williams, for coordinating the event.
The Tigers travel to MTSU next weekend for two days of conference play. We wish them well!
Auburn AL, April 2, 2022 – Your Memphis Tigers ventured to the University of Auburn Tiger den to test themselves against several of our fellow SCRC conference members. It was a beautiful day for players and fans alike. Slightly cool and partly cloudy. Great day for rugby.
Memphis took on the home team right off the bat and fell to Auburn 24-0. We had beaten Auburn a month earlier at UAB, and the lads were very disappointed with the loss. Auburn had improved since our last test with them. Biggest loss of the day was losing our captain, Josh Scott, to an ankle injury early in the match.
We took on Alabama in the next matchup. Determined to make a good showing, the Tigers took it to Alabama besting them 33-0.
For the final match of the day, the Tigers fell to a prepared side. Georgia squeaked by the Tigers, 17-10 in a game that could have gone either way. With two losses on the day, the tigers were finished and the lads were not happy with the result.
“We learned a lot,” said Coach Beck. “Our fitness is pretty good but we need to work on taking advantage of opportunities when they present, and we certainly must do a better job on defense. On a good day, we can hold our own against D1aa teams.”
The Tigers next host an 8-team tournament at home on April 16. The tournament will be at Memorial and will be a lot of fun.

March 19, 2022 – Murfreesboro, TN – The MTSU Rugby Team annually host the Mooseman 7s tournament, bringing teams from the north that the Tigers do not usually have an opportunity to compete against. This year was no exception. Northern teams came to the balmy south to escape the snow.
The Tigers went to the Mooseman 7s on the heels of their UAB first place and were feeling optimistic, despite knowing that several of their best players were not able to play due to injuries.
Things started off great for the Tigers, besting Principi, 19-17. They then romped over South Indy, 43-0. St. Louis and the Tigers played to a draw, 12-12. Then the Tigers clobbered Vandy, 45-0.
The day was cold, windy, and cloudy. The Tigers huddled in the vans to keep warm between matches.
On to the finals, with the Tigers facing Xavier. The valiant Tigers were out of gas by the last match. Coach Beck said that they were physically and emotionally drained. Xavier won the match and the tournament 26-0, but the Tigers fought to the very end, duly earning the second-place trophy.
Captain Josh Scott, unable to play due to being in the injured reserve, stated that it was terrible watching his mates play and he could not help. “I’ve gotta get well so I can get back in the game,” said Scott.
The Tigers get a weekend off then off to Auburn for a conference tune up. GTG!
Captain Scott really wanted to take 1st place.
