Tiger Rugby Ranked #33 in the Nation

The Goff Rugby Report dated October 29th lists the Tigers as #33 in the nation in the D2 division. This is the first time in the history of the team that Memphis has been ranked nationally.

The Tigers played in the South Independent Rugby conference (SIRC) until this year when they moved to the Southeastern Collegiate Rugby Conference (SCRC). They were placed in the D2 bracket of the SCRC along with Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Auburn, MTSU and Georgia Tech. The Tigers are undefeated in conference play so far.

This Saturday, 11/2 the Tigers take on cross state rival MTSU who is ranked #38 by Goff. The winner of this match will be crowned SCRC conference champion and will represent the conference in post season play starting November 16. Most likely, the SCRC D2 champ will face either Marshall, Xavier or Kent State in the first round.

The Tigers were initially scheduled to Play MTSU for the conference Title in Lexington, Kentucky on 11/16, but that is now the post season Round 1 weekend and the conference champion must be named in advance and prepared to represent the conference on that day.

The Tigers are blessed with exceptional talent due in part to the robust high school programs that have fed players to the program with several years experience. “Years of experience make a big difference”, said Coach Holley. “We are blessed to be surrounded with solid high school programs.”

The Tigers ask all fans to come out this Saturday, 11/2 to cheer us on to victory. “This is the most important match of our season”, stated Coach Cole. “It is a home game and it means a lot to have fans at the pitch.”

Tigers Tear Through Conference Opponents

The Memphis Tiger Rugby Team has had a good run this season, having bested each of their opponents and going undefeated in Southeastern Collegiate Rugby Conference (SCRC) – Tier 2 play. The Tigers squeaked by Georgia Tech in their first match but since then have been handily beating opponents averaging over 30 points per match.

The Tigers beat Mississippi State yesterday 31-19 in a match that showed the Tigers handily in control with a 28-0 halftime score. “We were able to give our developing players some significant match time”, said Coach Marc Holley. “The day was soppy because of the rain, but the Tigers played well and are getting better each week.”

The Tigers face their toughest test next week against cross state rival Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU). The Tigers have never beaten MTSU over the past 10 years and are hungry to change that dynamic. “We are so ready for MTSU, said captain Musa Banat. We lost by one point the last time we played and we are a much better team this year.

The Tigers will host MTSU this Saturday, November 2 at Memorial Field at 451 Zach Curlin Street on the Memphis campus. Kickoff will be at 1:00 pm. Fans, alumni and friends are encouraged to come out and cheer your Tigers to Victory.

Regardless of the outcome, the Tigers will be facing MTSU again in the conference playoffs, since The Tigers and MTSU sit in the top two posts in SCRC Tier 2 Conference play. The top two teams in the Tier 2 bracket face each other at the conference playoffs on November 16.
